Microsoft erects a 383-inch Surface tablet in the center of London

(THE VERGE-24 Oct) Microsoft has created a fascinating 383-inch Surface tablet at one of London’s biggest tourist attractions, Trafalgar Square. Sitting right next to Nelson’s Column, the giant Surface dwarfs all the other historic statues at Trafalgar Square. Microsoft built the it's 27-foot wide and 17-foot high structure in around 12 hours, and making it roughly a 383-inch display.

A purple Type Cover 2 has been recreated, with keys that feedback to a Surface 2 nearby. Microsoft is letting nearby school kids play on the keyboard with a spelling game. It’s all connected via USB and micro HDMI and you can jump on the keys to control the input. The company has even built space around the keys so you can walk around them before you select the correct key to jump on.

It’s all a publicity stunt in the center of London, designed to market Microsoft’s recently released Surface 2. Thousands of tourists and workers pass through Trafalgar Square each day, so Microsoft has clearly picked an ideal location for its giant Surface tablet. It might not be a giant Windows Phone or a giant Surface cake, but it’s just as impressive.

China Achieves Internet Access via Lightbulbs

Chinese scientists have successfully developed a new cheaper way of getting connected to internet by using signals sent through light bulbs instead of radio frequencies as in 'Wi-Fi', a move expected to radically change process of online connectivity. The design and construction of light source enable efficiency, long stable life, full spectrum intensity that is digitally controlled and easy to use.

According to Ms Chi Nan, an information technology professor in Shanghai's Fudan University, who leads a Li-Fi research team including scientists from the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“Four computers can be connected to internet through one- watt LED bulb using light as a carrier instead of traditional radio frequencies, as in Wi-Fi.”
Current wireless signal transmission equipment is expensive and low in efficiency, noted Chi in the article. "As for cell phones, millions of base stations have been established around the world to strengthen the signal but most of the energy is consumed on their cooling systems," she explained, but noted the energy utilization rate was only 5 percent."

She explained a lightbulb with embedded microchips can produce data rates as fast as 150 Mbps, much higher than the average broadband connection in China.

The term Li-Fi was coined as early as 2011 by Harald Haas, a professor of engineering at Edinburgh University, with the name standing for Light-Fidelity. The technology made use of LED bulbs that glow and darken faster than the human eye can see, and LED lights being semiconductors could be programmable. Haas had suggested that the applications and capacity for data would be limitless, ranging from using car headlights to transmit data, or employing line of sight light sources as data transmitters.

iPad 5 Rumors Round-up

The iPad 5 is Apple's next generation 9.7-inch tablet that will feature an iPad mini-style design with a smaller size, thinner side bezels, and an improved processor.

Apple is expected to announce its new thinner iPad 5 and an iPad Mini with Retina display this week. The claims come in a report from Ming-Chi Kuo, a Thai analyst for a Bangkok based investment firm KGI Securities. He has a strong track record in predicting Apple's product plans.

According to the report, the new iPad 5 will be 20% thinner with the measurements as 169.5 x 239.2 x 7.2mm shown in the leaked video by the Chinese parts supplier sw-box.com. iPad 5 is more lighter than the current model, and will have the same narrow bezel design as the iPad Mini. But the new tablets probably won't have the fingerprint scanning Touch ID feature developed for the iPhone 5S as there is no tangible evidence to suggest Touch ID will be appearing on the iPad. Kuo does expect the new M7 motion tracking chip to make the jump from phone to tablet.
Kuo was the first to anticipated the gold iPhone 5s, the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, and the removal of the iPhone 5 from the product line-up, all of which he called long before their official announcement.

Kuo claims the new iPad will include an 8-megapixel rear camera. It’s a vast improvement on the current iPad 4's 5-megapixel offering. The new image sensor is said to be 15 per cent larger and can let in 33 per cent more light.

The new iPad Mini 2 is expected to have a Retina display, boasting a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, which will put it ahead of its competitors, Google's Nexus 7 II and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD.

Rumours have suggested that Apple is looking to ditch the two LED backlighting bars found in the previous iPad models and replace it with one to decrease the device’s overall weight. This removal of one of the LED tubes would also improve battery life.

Chinese social site Weibo leaked an image of the rear casing for the iPad 5. The image reveals Apple has done away with the angular edges of the iPad 4 in favour of a more curved design like the mini, along with adding the mini-style speakers either side of the Lightning port.

A sketchy rumor has suggested Apple could be considering adding both a sapphire home button and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor to the iPad 5, and a recent video discovered that the iPad 5 will include a smaller home button that could potentially support the hardware. It remains unclear, however, whether Apple plans to expand its Touch ID fingerprint sensor to its iPad lineup at this point in time.

Apple is hosting a media event on October 22 that will focus on the fifth-generation iPad and the new iPad mini. The event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, with satellite events in both London and Japan.

Nokia Lumia 1520 - Expected to launch on October 22

There have been many rumors in recent weeks suggesting Nokia is working on its first Lumia phablet, the Nokia Lumia 1520. Though Nokia has not announced anything officially. However, it is expected that Nokia revealed its first Windows Phone powered phablet next to five other devices on October 22 at an event next week in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It's expected to go on sale in the US in the second week of November.

According to the rumors, the forthcoming phablet Lumia 1520 will have a 2GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 6-inch 1080P AMOLED PureMotion HD display, 2GB of RAM, 16 and 32 GB storage options with support for microSD card, however, the leak did not reveal the maximum supported storage. The phablet will run the latest version of Windows Phone 8. The phablet have a 20.7 Megapixel camera featuring PureView camera with Zeiss Optics, Panorama , Auto Focus and advanced LED Mechanism. The phablet will come in black, white and yellow - and other leaks have suggested cyan and red are coming too. The Lumia 1520 is further said to support 4G and LTE, while would also come with nano-SIM card support.

It's worth mentioning that Microsoft announced the Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update recently, as well as the addition of a third column of Live Tiles on the Start screen. The third column will only be available for Windows Phone devices packing a display of full HD resolution. GSMArena has said the the GDR3 update, some UI changes and the third column of Live Tiles will land for the Nokia Lumia 1520.

My Nokia Blog - citing a leaked specification list - reported the Nokia Lumia 1520 will sport a 3,400 mAh battery and an inbuilt Qi wireless charging. Some news outlets have noted however that availability of wireless charging may vary by regions.

Hugh Jackman as Brand Ambassador for Micromax Smartphones

Micromax has enjoyed success as the company behind the Canvas line of smartphones for quite some time now. So much so, that they've been able to employ the talents of actor Hugh Jackman as its brand ambassador. Mr. Jackman will be seen endorsing the soon-to-be-launched Micromax smartphone called Canvas Turbo, which is part of the Canvas series of smartphones for Micromax.

Micromax is an Indian Consumer Electronics company located in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. It focuses on the manufacturing of Mobile Telephones, Tablet Computers, 3G, Datacards and LED Televisions. Micomax is the first Indian mobile operator to have roped in a Hollywood star as its brand ambassador.

Micromax's Chief Marketing Officer Shubhodip Pal said in a statement:
"As we look to expand our footprint across the globe in various international markets, the association with the Hugh Jackman is an ideal partnership for us to connect with audiences."
Jackman, who you'll undoubtedly recognize from his portrayal of Wolverine in many feature films, makes a brief appearance in the following teaser showing off Micromax's upcoming flagship, the Canvas Turbo.
"I am a huge lover of India as it is one of the most exciting countries in the world and we also share our love for cricket. Phones are genuinely time saving devices that can help you live a better life while juggling around with different situations," the X-Men movie series star said.
Micromax is next to Samsung in terms of handset sales in India as per second quarter mobile phone shipment figures of 2013 released by market research and analyst firm IDC.

Not much is known about the Canvas Turbo right now, except that it's set to run on a quad-core processor (MediaTek based chipset: MT6589T), 1GB RAM, 32GB inbuilt memory, 13.0-megapixel main camera and may be the first Canvas handset with a 1080p display. It'll likely feature many of the new Android software improvements introduced with the Canvas 4.

Micromax was able to win a lot of fans with its Canvas HD smartphone, as it was able to offer quad-core performance on a very competitive price compared to the major manufacturers.

Lenovo unveils its first 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet

Lenovo is launching its Miix 2, a first Windows 8.1 device this month. It's one of the latest tablets to use Intel's quad-core Atom Z3740 SoC processor clocked at 1.8 Ghz with 2GB RAM and 32 GB of storage. The Miix 2 include an 8-inch HD display screen running at 1280 x 800 resolution with multi-touch and 178 degree wide viewing angel; 16:10 widescreen IPS.

The tablet will also feature a microSD card slot allowing up to an additional 32 GB of storage, Wireless N and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, 3G-GPS3 connectivity in selected countries, and a battery promising up to seven hours on a single charge. By taking the advantage of much improved Windows 8.1 support for smaller displays, the company should have a winner on its hands.

Lenovo includes an optional stylus and a detachable cover that makes it look a lot like Apple's iPad mini at first glance. The tablet equipped with a 5-megapixel camera at the rear and a 2-megapixel one at the front.

The Miix 2 comes with pre-installed Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013. It's not perfect for small screen display as Microsoft has still not created a Modern UI version of the office suite. Creating and editing documents using the desktop programs may prove to be laborious on such a small screen. However, it may be useful for some.

Lenovo's Miix 2 is a light weight (weighs only 350g) and is 8.35mm thick so it compares well to its small Windows-based competitors. A 32GB version will debut for $299 and a 64GB will cost $349. The optional cover with stylus pen is expected to retail at $20.

Up to 7 hours long battery life and low price makes it a great value tablet and consumers should take a look when it is released later this month.

Microsoft releasing Windows 8.1 today

Microsoft's update to its Windows operating system delivers a handful of new features

Microsoft is releasing its long-awaited Windows 8.1 upgrade as a free download starting today (Thursday, Oct 17). Previously, Windows 8 received mixed reviews when it was released. Critics blasted Microsoft for its redesigned user interface and removing the famous Start button. The company promised improvements in the next version of the operating system, now known as Windows 8.1. With Windows 8.1, Microsoft has attempted to fix a lot of the things that were wrong with Windows 8, and make the operating system more appealing by adding a bunch of additional features. It is a massive improvement over its predecessor.

The Window 8.1 update is free for Windows 8 users. You can simply find it in Windows Store app. It may take a few hours for updates to reach everyone. Windows 7 users need to purchase the base software for $119.99 (£75) and Windows 8.1 Pro for $199.99. It’s not designed for installation on devices running Windows XP or Windows Vista. Computers with Windows 8.1 already installed will go on sale Friday. People will also be able to buy stand-alone copies of Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 has several new features, including being able to boot directly to the desktop as well as the return of the Start button. The update adds some new finger-and gesture-friendly shortcuts for touch-based apps. The new Windows 8.1 lets you watch movies or play games with Xbox, access files anywhere with SkyDrive, or find your next favorite app in the Windows Store. You won't have to download Skype anymore. Anyone will get it when they upgrade their operating system to Windows 8.1 or purchase a Windows 8.1 PC. It'll be available as the default communications experience in Windows 8.1, replacing Microsoft's Windows 8 Messaging app.

Windows 8.1 returns the Start button to the desktop, although not the way it was before Windows 8 came along. In Windows 7 and before, a click on Start would have brought up programs and important folders in a list. Now, clicking the button will bring you back to your last menu, while a right-click will reveal more traditional options. From here you can easily restart or power down the computer, access things like your programs, system settings, and Device Manager, along with the Task Manager, Control Panel, File Explorer, and Search and Run functions. This menu can be accessed with a long press for computers with touch screens.

Windows 8 supports two tile sizes at the moment; the new Start screen in Windows 8.1 now offers a choice of four different tile sizes. The new large and small sizes are great and provide more options for organizing apps. Windows 8.1 automatically detects screen size and resolution and if it’s running on a big screen, it will provide more rows.

The Internet Explorer received many improvements with its most recent update, but not everyone prefers to use Microsoft's Web browser. The browser now supports plugin-free HTML5 video, WebGL and the latest standards for closed captioning. It also lets you have up to 100 tabs per window in modern UI version, which can now also permanently show tabs and the address bar.

Windows 8.1 now allows users to set default apps for things like the Web browser, e-mail client, music player, video player, photo viewer, calendar provider, and map address. Windows 8.1 also gives users the option to organize apps into various groups. A right-click will give you the opportunity to name specific app groups. Not every app is displayed in the Start screen. Windows 8.1 will allow running two apps side by side rather than one thin and one large as is the case with Windows 8. On higher-resolution devices you will be able to run three or four app windows side by side for those who really want to embrace multitasking on the same screen at the same time.

Live Tiles can be reordered by dragging and dropping makes it easy to select and move lots of tiles around at the same time.

The onscreen keyboard now includes the ability to type numbers or punctuation marks by swiping up or away from certain keys on the standard QWERT layout, eliminating the need to toggle between numeric and alphabetic layouts. Users can also select from suggested words mid-stream using side swipes and taps on the virtual spacebar.
Microsoft introduced Hot Corners last year with the release of Windows 8. Each corner of the screen has a different function; the Charms menu is in the lower and upper right, the back button is in the lower left, and the running apps window is in the upper right.

Users were previously forced to look to third-party alternatives to disable this feature. However, Microsoft adds the option to disable these corners directly into the operating system.

Microsoft added even more customization options in Windows 8.1. You can now set the same background for both your desktop and Start home screens.

Microsoft Windows Phone 8 update features Driving Mode

MICROSOFT is introducing a drive mode to its Windows Phones to help users avoid distractions on the road. Other features include rotation lock, new layout for bigger phones.

Microsoft announced update for Windows Phone 8 software. This significant update offering a number of enhancements including support for higher resolution and to include a new featurecalled Driving Mode.

It's the third update to Windows Phone 8 software since the system's release a year ago. Devices with this new update will start appearing in the next few weeks. According to Microsoft, all the older phones will be eligible for a free upgrade.

A new Driving Mode will automatically silence incoming calls and texts so that you can focus on the road. You also can configure the feature to automatically send out a reply to say that you're driving. What the Driving Mode won't do, however, is block outgoing calls or texts.

It can be activated automatically when the phone is linked with a Bluetooth device in a car. Apple added a “Do Not Disturb” feature for iPhones, but that needs to be turned on manually.

The new OS is going to support 5 and 6-inch class devices with support for resolutions up to 1920X1080.Currently, the system supports a highest resolution of 1280 pixels by 768 pixels, which is adequate for phones with screens no larger than 5 inches on the diagonal. But video and image quality degrades when stretched out on larger phones, such as a 6.3-inch Android phone from Samsung.

There are a few ways Microsoft Corp. will catch up to the iPhone and Android phones with the new update. For the first time, Windows phones will have a rotation lock function, so that the screen won't switch back and forth between horizontal and vertical mode while you're curled up in bed. There also will be a central way to close open apps. Before, you had to go into each open app and press and hold the back button.

Microsoft is launching a program to give app developers early access to the new software. Apple has had a similar program for the iOS software behind iPhones and iPads, while Google often has worked with selected developers on unreleased features.

Get ready for the Galaxy S5: Samsung to launch Galaxy S5 in Jan 2014

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is set to be one of the biggest smartphone launches of 2014

According to South Korean media sources, Samsung is planning to expedite the presentation and launch of its latest high-end smartphone. The Galaxy S5 unveiled as soon as January 2014 ahead of a release in February. The previous models in the line, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4, were launched in May 2012 and April 2013 respectively. It may be a party of five in the next three months, as the Nexus 5 smartphone that's expected to be announced next week could be joined by the Galaxy S5.

According to the media source in South Korea, Naver, Samsung's decision to fast-track the new model is because Galaxy S4 sales has been low, and the company hopes various new technologies in the Galaxy S5 will help turn the slump around. The company sold around 10 million Galaxy S4 phones worldwide within one month of the smartphone's release.

The source Naver is a site made up of ex-Samsung employees, and we do know that the Korean electronics giant really wants to upgrade its smartphone to compete with the iPhone 5S.

Rumors suggesting that the Galaxy S5 will be equipped with a 64-bit, eight-core Exynos 5430 chipset. This chip will feature Heteregenous Multi-Processing (HMP) technology that allows all eight cores of the processor to work simultaneously. In the current eight-core chips that Samsung uses in its Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, only four of the eight cores can operate at a time.

Samsung co-CEO Boo-Keun Yoon revealed that Samsung plans to connect all of its devices together with the new operating system, Tizen – co-developed by Samsung and Intel.

Samsung Galaxy S5 is also expected to have a 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization and better performance in lowlight conditions. The recently unveiled Isocell sensor is also expected to debut with this smartphone. According to GSMarena the new lens has been designed to fit in its slimline range of smartphones.

Earlier reports point towards a waterproof and dust-resistant body and a curved and unbreakable screen. Rumors suggested that the Galaxy S5 might finally feature a metal housing in place of the flimsy-feeling plastics Samsung typically uses.

Samsung has recently unveiled the world's first smartphone with a curved screen, named Galaxy Round.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Concept Smartphone

It’s hard to imagine what will the Galaxy S6 look like, but the guys from Apple Conspiracy wants it to tout a plastic unibody with a new protective nano coating called hyperskin, “a plastic you won’t be mad about”.
The Galaxy S6 concept flaunts a beautiful GravityUX on top of Android 6.0 (but what the code name will be…. Nobody knows!). The phone concept also has an 18MP camera with 4K high frame rate video recording. The most worthy part of the concept is a battery that could last a week of heavy usage off of a single charge.

Last but not least, the Galaxy S6 concept will have a 4.5-inch S-OLED display with a stunning 2K display. These are, of course, simply dreams and desires as the concept has technologies that we have yet to implement, but the folks from Apple Conspiracy say:
It includes technologies we have yet to implement, but it’s our only way of giving justice to the so-much-used word “innovation” without just being a marketing term. In our opinion, only in next couple of years we could have some real progress in this matter. But new models have to be launched in ever shorter time intervals, and justify their “innovation” by masking the real problems.
Let’s hope in two years that innovation won’t just be a marketing term so we can actually see something like this in the future.

NASA funded for 3D Printer that prints food

The future of food unveiled. NASA funded the development of a 3D printer that prints food. So, one day the astronauts may press a couple of buttons on their computer that will send command to 3D printer to print a delicious home cooked meal for them. The idea is that they wouldn’t cook their food in the normal manner; they will simply print it out from the basic ingredients such as oils, water, salt, and carbohydrate powders.

The prototype of 3D printer released what can print food in the US this week. A video released on Internet shows the printer creating a kind of pizza pie, complete with dough, tomato sauce and cream cheese, which is then cooked on a heated surface. It’s a huge step for technology. The printer is in early stages of development and the process is still inadequate, however, the technology is expected to pick up quickly. Perhaps it will soon be able to create a roast lamb, with potatoes chips, green and mint sauce.

Apple cutting the production of iPhone 5C in half

APPLE has halved production of its new cheaper, plastic-cased iPhone only a month after its release due to low demand in Chinese market. It is reported by a Chinese website C Technology that the company will reduce its current 300,000 unit-a-day pace to 150,000.

No comments have made by Apple on the reason for the cutback, but if the report is accurate, the most likely reason would be because of poor demand for the iPhone 5C as compared to Apple’s flagship iPhone 5S. Both phones were released last month; most people have been buying the iPhone 5S than the 5C

Apple developed low price version of iPhone5C especially for China and India. In China, demand for the 5C has been so low retailers were forced to lower the sale price even further.

Furthermore there's no delay to order a 5C on Apple's own website. Yet the company warns orders for the 5S is on back order.

HP Chromebook 11 - The world's lightest laptop

Google unveiled a new addition to its growing stable of Chromebooks, the HP Chromebook 11. The device is on sale now for $279, and offers a white plastic case with color-splashed variants which draw from the palette of the Google Chrome logo to spice things up a bit. The device is made especially for those users who live in the browser, and never venture out for anything.

So the charger supplied with HP Chromebook 11 can also be used to power your smartphones. The laptop gets a reported six hours on its built-in battery. HP Chromebook 11 is one of the lightest laptop on the market as it weighs in at just over two pounds.

Other features include the 11.6-inch IPS display, as well as a magnesium frame that supports the plastic exterior and should make it pretty durable. The speakers are resides under the keyboard in order to provide better sound. Many Google apps come built-in, including 100GB of Google Drive cloud storage (free for two years) and a 60-day free trial of Google Play Music All Access.

HP Chromebook 11 is powered by a Samsung Exynos 5250 processor. You’ll be running Chrome OS. As the processor is not too powerful, its’ not going to be doing any heavy-duty video processing.

Digital Photography

Photography is an art of capturing moments. In modern world, digital photography replaces the conventional photography. In digital photography the image is exposed, captured and stored electronically rather than on film where a chemical process is used to expose and capture images.

In digital photography the film is replaced with a light sensitive electronic device known as an image sensor, made up of millions of photoelectric devices that convert light into an electrical signal. There are two most common types of image sensors used in digital cameras, the Charged Coupled Device, known as CCD and Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor, known as CMOS.

The strength of electrical signal depends upon the intensity of light that exposes the image sensor. These electrical signals are then processed through a series of electronic circuits and eventually stored in some sort of internal or external memory in a standard image file format such as a JPEG. When processed by a computer, you will be able to reproduce an image to be printed on photographic paper.

What is Megapixels?

Digital camera manufacturers emphasize megapixels in their promotional spiels, but how to translate megapixels into real-world measurements when you want to print or view your images? A digital image is made up of tiny dots known as pixels (picture element). Each pixel represents the smallest unit of photograph. The pixels combine and form the entire image. The amount of pixels in a photograph only determines the maximum output size of the resulting image in print. You can use the following guidelines to understand the output size of image corresponding to pixels count.

    · A two-megapixel camera will produce a good 4x6 inch print. This is also a good resolution for sending photos via email or posting onto a website.

    · A three-megapixel camera will produce a good 5x7 inch print and an adequate 8x10 inch print.

    · A four-megapixel camera will produce a good 8x10 inch print and decent 10x12 inch print.

How many Megapixels?

If you only viewing the photos on your camera, posting on your website or social media sites or taking a normal-sized print, you don’t really need higher pixel rate to save a handsome amount of cash. A 4 to 6 megapixels camera is enough to use for general photography. Instead of pixel count, look for advance features like image stabilization, optical zooming, auto-focus, face detection, red-eye reduction, file format support and other favorable features. All these features would have a greater impact on your photographs. These features will be explained in a separate article.
